Liz’s School Sharing: Respect Begins with Noticing Others

Recently, Liz shared with the P1 and P2 students about her journey in giving back to the community. Her topic was Respect, and she spoke about how respect is not just about using polite words. It is also about noticing others, caring about their needs, and treating every person with kindness and dignity.

Liz’s community service journey began when she was five years old. She saw migrant workers sitting under the hot sun and wanted to do something to appreciate them. With her family’s help, she set up a lemonade stall at Tampines Dormitory. Through this simple act, she learnt that respect begins when we notice others and care enough to act.

She also shared that community service becomes more meaningful when done with others. Over the years, Liz started organising projects with her friends, learning that teamwork is part of respect too. It means listening, asking for help, and valuing what each person can contribute.

This spirit later grew into Smol Friends, a SmolBoss community where children team up to support meaningful causes. One of their projects was supporting a Chinese New Year event by GIC for children whose family members are in prison. The children helped create a warm and welcoming space through hands-on activities such as DIY hot-pot resin keychains and pulled candy making. Liz realised that when we treat others with care and respect, they often respond with kindness too.

During her sharing, Liz also told the younger students about a moment that moved her deeply. While leaving a nursing home, she saw an elderly lady hugging a damaged doll. The manager explained that dolls can bring comfort to some seniors. This made Liz think about how she and her friends could help, perhaps by collecting soft toys, wrapping gifts, writing cards, or raising funds through craft sales.

Her message to the P1 and P2 students was simple and powerful:

Respect means seeing people with your heart and responding with care.

Through her sharing, Liz reminded the younger children that they are not too young to help. Every small act can make someone feel seen, valued and loved.

At SmolBoss, we believe every little bit can make a big difference. More importantly, we hope more children will grow kind and respectful hearts, and find the courage to serve the community in their own small ways.
