Some projects begin with a big event.
This one began with tiny eggs.

For SmolBoss founders Elizabeth and Benjamin, these quail chicks are part of something more meaningful than they may first appear. One day, they will join Open Village, where seniors in a nursing home can take on meaningful mini jobs and continue contributing to daily life with dignity.

In Open Village, quail care is not just about looking after animals. It is part of a community where seniors can care for living things, take on responsibility, and stay connected to everyday routines. Alongside quail care, residents may also take part in gardening, herb growing, aquaponics support, and indoor roles in familiar spaces like a minimart and kopi corner.
This is also not Elizabeth and Benjamin’s first quail journey. They cared for quails for two years and had already incubated eggs three times. Over time, the quails brought so much joy to their home, from the excitement of watching new life hatch to the simple delight of fresh eggs.

But caring for quails is not just about enjoying cute chicks. It also comes with real daily responsibility. They learned to change dirty pads, feed the quails, and regularly check the temperature, especially because young chicks cannot regulate their own body heat well. These small but important tasks taught them patience, attentiveness, and consistency. You can read more about their earlier quail journey in this post.
Because they already know the joy quails can bring, they hope these little birds will one day bring that same joy to residents in the nursing home too, not just as animals to watch, but as part of daily life, care, and connection.
Benjamin, our cardboard king, also jumped into the mission by building a fun brooder for the chicks. It was practical, creative, and full of heart.

We believe children can contribute meaningfully from a young age, and seniors deserve opportunities to care, contribute, and stay active in community life too.
That is why this small project means so much to us.
Sometimes, even tiny eggs can become part of something much bigger.
