This Chinese New Year, SmolBoss and our SmolFriend supported a CNY event for families impacted by incarceration. We wanted to create a space that felt warm, welcoming, and joyful, especially for children and caregivers who may be carrying unseen stress.

A sweet idea inspired by a trip to China
During a family trip to China, Elizabeth and Benjamin became fascinated by pulled maltose candy. They learned the technique, watched how it was stretched and twirled, and loved how it turned into a treat that was meant to be shared.

When we returned to Singapore, we discovered something special: many older adults here remembered pulled maltose candy too. It was the “lollipop” from their childhood, a snack that brought back memories of school days, neighbourhood shops, and simpler times.
That became our CNY concept: a SmolBoss favourite snack that could connect generations through shared memories.
Pulled candy, with a SmolBoss twist
At the event, participants got to try making pulled candy, then personalise it with toppings. To keep it fun and playful, Elizabeth and Benjamin added a SmolBoss twist:
- Crushed peanuts for a nutty crunch
- Sour plum powder for a tangy surprise
Watching families experiment with flavours was one of the best parts. Kids were curious and brave with the toppings, and adults smiled as they remembered the candy from their own childhood.

Benjamin came to the event with fractures in both arms and casts on, but he still taught participants how to make pulled candy and helped with serving. His determination reminded us that kindness finds a way.

With every lick of a SmolBoss favourite snack shared, childhood memories returned, now passed on to the younger generation.
Smol Friends in action: Amira at the DIY mini hotpot station
SmolBoss never works alone. We are grateful for our Amira who step up and support each event with kindness and responsibility.

A special shoutout to Amira, who assisted at the DIY mini hotpot crafting station. She helped participants with materials, guided children step-by-step, and made sure everyone felt included and confident as they created.

It was a beautiful reminder that small support roles matter, and that young people can contribute in meaningful ways when given the chance.
What we hope participants took home
Beyond the candy and crafts, we hoped families would leave with:
- a moment of lightness during the festive season
- a shared experience that built connection
- a reminder that they are seen and supported

How might we…
How might we design more festive community experiences that help families facing difficult circumstances feel connected, included, and celebrated?
