Creating Calming Herb Bags with Seniors

The Smol Boss team had the joy of co-facilitating a heartwarming workshop with seniors at Monfort Care to make traditional Chinese scent bag 香囊 (xiāngnáng). This activity brought together ten aromatic herbs, carefully pounded by hand, to create soothing herb sachets. The seniors delighted in mixing the fragrances, chatting about the herbs’ calming properties, and crafting beautiful pouches.

In ancient China, 香囊 served as both a practical item and a cultural emblem. Often worn as a necklace or tucked into clothing, these sachets were believed to ward off evil spirits, protect against disease, and bring good luck. Their intricate embroidery and delightful scents made them cherished gifts, representing care and thoughtfulness.

This workshop was more than just a crafting session—it was an opportunity to connect across generations, share stories, and embrace the joys of sensory play. We left with big smiles, fragrant creations, and a reminder of the simple pleasures of working with our hands.
